CAREER SUMMARY

 

UIUC Visiting Art and Technology Integration Specialist. In charge of creating a new digital gallery space in Krannert Art Museum. Curating and programming works for CANVAS, a 3-walled 4D open lab and art studio located in new gallery. Facilitate interdisciplinary Art and Technology projects across and off campus. Maintain server and act as webmaster for http://www.canvas.uiuc.edu. Position funded by Beckman Center, Krannert Art Museum and School of Art and Design; other tasks have ranged from giving art gallery tours and helping with technological installations to creating syllabi and teaching classes in Computer Programming for Artists.

UIUC Visiting Research Programmer. Data visualization for a 3D Virtual World CAVE/CUBE environment and for smaller, more portable 3D devices. http://www.rehearsal.uiuc.edu/people/rose/landspeeder/ in C++ and OpenGL. Also web application programming in Coldfusion, Flash, Shockwave Lingo, ASP, PHP, mySQL, Microsoft Access, Perl, HTML. Design work using Photoshop, Quark, InDesign, Freehand, Illustrator.

UIUC Visiting Project Coordinator. Facilitated interdisciplinary Arts and Technologies projects across the campus of the University of Illinois. Oversaw, acted as technical director or advisor, programmed and designed projects demonstrating increasing penetration of technology into the work of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Instructor. With a colleague, I developed and taught a course at the University of Illinois entitled "Computer Programming For Artists." Languages taught: Lingo, Actionscript, Coldfusion, C++, OpenGL, Proce55ing, html. In 2005 I received a Teaching Excellence by Graduate Student Award at the University of Illinois.

Narrative Media Graduate Student. I will be receiving my MFA in Narrative Media at UIUC in Spring 2005.

Musician + Multimedia Artist. Toured the US and Europe writing and performing original music in a 4-piece rock / experimental technologies band. Created CDs and CD-ROMs for Reprise /Warner Brothers Records, SubPop, City Slang (Berlin), SpinArt, Frontier, Parasol. Appeared on MTV, CNN, Nulle Parte Ailleurs (France). 12 records, 2 EPs, and 1 DVD released (as of 2004). Poster Children / Salaryman.

Women In Engineering. Presented speeches for Women in Engineering and Science, and also for the UIUC Engineering Reflections/Projections programs.
Martial Arts Instructor. Certified H.M.D. Martial Arts Instructor and 1st Degree Black Belt at H.M.D. Academy of Tae Kwon Do in Savoy Illinois. (currently instructing at the Urbana Park District).
Podcast. My partner (Rick Valentin) and I have a weekly podcast (one of the earliest known podcasts, starting 1997) at www.radiozero.us.

 


PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN PROJECTS

Landspeeder (above, 2005) - My virtual worlds work at UIUC. Working under Urban Planning Professor Varkki George, I am developing a 4-D data visualization of a large dataset for a 3-D Virtual Reality CAVE/CUBE environment. A prototype started in VRML, then I ported it to Macromedia Director Lingo, now I have ported it to C++ and OpenGL. (http://www.rehearsal.uiuc.edu/people/rose/landspeeder/)

Fresh Lipstick (2004) I designed and programmed (html, PHP) a website for Palgrave-Macmillan book Fresh Lipstick, author Linda Scott. (website)

In The Garden Of Antiquities - Indianapolis Museum of Art / Freer Sackler Gallery (2004) I did most of the design work and ALL of the flash programming for this website. (Flash website)

Design+Digital Rehearsal Studio (1999-2004) I designed and programmed this website (flash, html, ASP) to promote the DDRS lab at the University of Illinois. During the 3 years I was Visiting Project Coordinator, I headed, programmed, or acted as technical advisor, for more than 30 interdisciplinary Arts and Technologies projects across the University. Highlights include "Leda And The Swan, An Immersive Mythologica Event" - a digital video set to a 30-piece live orchestral ensemble with live dance, "A Walk Along the Yamuna" CD-ROM study of a project to redesign the landscape around the Taj Mahal... Chicago Initiative Project CD-ROM (2004) Interdisciplinary collaborative study of Chicago Technology / UIUC and City Of Chicago Mayor's Council. In this class we studied several hi-tech/creative class friendly cities, ran focus groups, visited and conducted interviews to research what was needed in order to market Chicago as a New Tech Industry city. The final output of our semester was a booklet, CD-ROM and website. (In addition to researching, conducting focus groups and interviews, I also programmed and designed the CD-ROM/Website. Tickets To The Sunset (2005) Conceptual Art Piece: Tickets to the Sunset for sale on Ticketmaster's web outlet, Ticketweb. Eggpass.org (2004-) Social network trace project. 12 eggs were created with Sculpey clay, inscribed with a website and a number and handed out in class. Recipients are told to visit website and input their egg # and location, then pass egg to a friend. http://www.eggpass.org
Windgarden (2001) Digital representation of a "wind garden" - Champaign, Il airspeed is retrieved via random weather server and displayed as movement. Cursor movement also affects display of garden. Try hitting "g" and see what happens. [launch shockwave]
Errors (2001) Celebrates syntax and other coding errors.
Tornadoes (2003) Translation of tornado frequency data from years 1959 to 1999 into digital candlelight.
Genesis (2001) Portion of the beginning of Genesis translated along a path of 9 different web interpreters. Continuing the path of translation of the bible (which was not originally written in English.)
Constitution (2003) Constitution appears on a website and degrades (characters randomly change, change is permanent) each time it is accessed.
